God's Designer Label
Women, in particular, are often accused of spending too much money on buying clothes and having far too many clothes in their bulging wardrobes.  It was not always like this. When God first created Adam and Eve they were both naked and had no need of any wardrobe or clothes chest.

Unlike most modern day husbands, Adam (before the fall anyway) never heard his wife utter those dreadful words, “I haven’t got anything to wear!” for Eve did not even know what clothes were neither did she know that she was naked.   What happened to change all this?  The story is all too familiar to most of us.  Adam and Eve were created “different” from all the animals for they were made special as they were made in God’s image.  They had total freedom.  There was only one thing that God had forbidden Adam to do, and you can tell from Scripture that, as head of his household, he passed that information to his wife Eve. They were commanded by God not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The fateful day came when Eve was tempted by the devil in the form of a serpent.  She took the fruit and also gave it to Adam. In direct disobedience to God’s word to him, Adam, and his wife, ate of the forbidden fruit.  Immediately everything changed.  The first thing they noticed was that they were naked – their immortality, which had clothed them, had departed and they were now standing in naked mortality!  They thought that if they could cover their nakedness everything would be alright again and God would not realise what they had done.  They sewed fig leaves together to make aprons which only gave them partial covering of their nakedness.  When God came to talk with them at the cool of the day, Adam and Eve hid from Him saying they were afraid because of their nakedness.  When God asked Adam what he had done Adam tried to put the blame on his wife and then on God [“the woman thou gavest me” Genesis 3: 12].  In order to atone for their sin God made them coats of animal skins – presumably He sacrificed animals, possibly lambs, to make this covering for their sin.  This sacrificial covering for their sin was a foreshadow of the time when God would send His own Son into this world to pay the price for our sin.  We know that John the Baptist realised this when he saw Jesus and declared, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” St John 1:29. The origin of clothes was due to Adam’s sin. Adam and Eve swiftly learned the lesson that many of us struggle with.  We cannot come to God on our own terms, neither can we impress Him by our own achievements for Isaiah 64:6 tells us “that all our righteousness is as filthy rags” in the sight of the Lord.  Some people think that their own good works will make them acceptable to God but the Bible tells us that Jesus is the only way to God,  “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14: 6.   Designer labelled clothes are usually very costly.  It was also very costly for God to provide a covering for our sin for it cost His Son the Lord Jesus Christ his life when He died on Calvary as a sacrifice for our sins.  We need to come to Him in repentance and clothe ourselves in His righteousness.  Then one day we mortals will put on immortality (I Corinthians 15:53) and all things will be restored to the perfection that God made in the beginning. In that wonderful day when all things are made new we will be able to say, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness….” Isaiah 61:10. There can be no clothes more worthy to be desired than those garments which the Lord has designed and prepared for us.  Better still, they are freely available to us for God’s designer clothes label is the Lord Jesus Christ and His label says “paid in full” at Calvary.  Please make sure you are clothed in Him. Irene White
